“Positive Behaviour Supports” is a systems approach for establishing the social culture and environment needed for schools to achieve both social and academic success for all students.
The goals EBS are to teach students social responsibility, prevent the development of problem behaviour, and to improve the academic performance of students through maintenance of a positive, safe, and culturally responsive school culture.
Within the EBS framework, all students receive instruction in the school’s expectations, routines in and out of the classroom and are acknowledged for making appropriate behavior choices. An instructional approach to discipline is used to encourage self-management and problem-solving skills.
All children need guidance from adults to choose appropriate behaviour. Even though clear expectations, direct teaching and positive reinforcement are provided, there is a need, from time to time, to apply a consequence when a child has exhibited inappropriate behavior. Parents are key members of the team in helping children learn acceptable behaviour. Therefore, communication with parents is critical- by phone or note sent home – when a child has exhibited poor behavior so that parents and school can work together to guide the child.
Please see The Mountview Matrix for details regarding expected student behavior.
